As a result of the construction of the berlin wall, streets, squares and residential areas were divided overnight and local traffic was disrupted (see berlin wall map). On the evening of August 13, ruling Mayor Willy Brandt stated in the House of Representatives about berlin wall: " The Berlin Senate is accusing the world of the illegal and inhumane measures taken by Germany dividers, the oppressors of East Berlin and those who threaten West Berlin".

The Berlin Wall finally became a concrete wall measuring between 3.5 and 4 meters high, with the inside made of steel cables to increase its strength (see berlin wall map). At the very top, a rounded surface was placed so that no one could cling to it. At the foot of the berlin wall was built what is known as the "death strip", consisting of a ditch, a fence, a road where military vehicles, alarm systems, automatic weapons, watchtowers and 24-hour dog patrols were constantly circulating.

At least 140 people were killed on the Berlin Wall (berlin wall map) alone between 1961 and 1989 or were killed in direct connection with the GDR border regime: 100 GDR refugees who were shot, accidentally or killed while trying to cross the border fortifications of berlin wall. 30 people from East and West without intention to flee who were shot or died; 8 GDR border soldiers killed on duty, killed by deserters, comrades, a refugee, a rescuer or a policeman from West Berlin.

Sunday will mark 25 years since the Berlin Wall was torn down, ending almost 30 years of division in the German capital. Berlin wall had been constructed overnight and on the night of 9 November 1989 it fell, with thousands of East Germans travelling to the barrier to demand the gates be opened. They were met on the other side by huge crowds of “Wessis” waiting to greet them with flowers and champagne, starting celebrations that lasted for days. This weekend, Berlin is celebrating again, with a symbolic wall of illuminated balloons being released into the sky amid a programme of concerts, plays and exhibitions throughout the city (berlin wall map).
